Alternative Firings

Wood Firing

During the spring of 2013 I got involved and immersed into the wood firing process. It was a totally new and unexpected experience for me.
I typically like to be in control of the outcome and have an expected and predictable result. The wood firing process shifted my perception and unleashed my fear of unpredictability. All work was not glazed and textures and colors are the direct result of the firing.

Raku Firing

Raku firing is my "first love", the immediacy and partial unpredictability gives me the satisfaction of instant accomplishment. (In contrast with my usual way of surface treatment - underglaze painting that takes forever.) I use multiple lowfire glazes to create shiny surfaces. After firing, my sculptures still look like they are on fire.
